Mullein has long been regarded as a plant of light and protection. Tall and luminous in the landscape, its dried stalks were traditionally dipped in oil or tallow and used as torches to illuminate paths, mark gatherings, and offer a sense of guidance and safety after dark. Across centuries, mullein has held both practical and symbolic meaning as a plant associated with illumination and resilience.

Introduced to North America by European settlers, mullein was readily embraced by Indigenous peoples who recognized its usefulness and incorporated it into their herbal practices. Over time, the plant became part of a shared landscape of healing, valued especially for its support of the lungs and its gentle, protective qualities.

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore the history and folklore of mullein and learn how this humble plant has been used across cultures. Together, we will create a traditional mullein torch using dried stalks, herbs, flowers, and natural materials. Each torch will be crafted with care and intention, incorporating botanicals chosen for their protective and blessing qualities.

Participants will leave with their own handcrafted mullein torch to use ceremonially, seasonally, or as a symbolic object for the home or altar. No prior experience is necessary. All materials will be provided.
